Dodge . How to Replace the Muffler on a Dodge DurangoDeveloped in 1998, the Dodge Durango gave the manufacturer an SUV that could haul heavy loads with the cargo space of a truck, but had better handling like smaller trucks. Still dubbed as a compact SUV, many Durango owners save money by making minor repairs themselves. If you hear noises coming from the rear where your muffler sits, then it might be time for a new muffler. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 Crawl underneath your Dodge Durango at the rear of the truck to inspect your muffler. See if you can spot any holes or severe rust spots causing holes, or loose hangers. This lets you know if you need a new muffler. 2 Purchase a muffler for a Dodge Durango. It should have a 2.25-inch center inlet/outlet, be 4 inches thick X 9.75 inches wide and have a 13-inch case length. You can purchase either a new muffler or a used muffler; however, new mufflers are more reliable than used mufflers. 3 Jack up the SUV and place it on four jack stands if possible. Although you tend to have a lot of room underneath a Dodge Durango, the clearance needed for pipes when removing and installing a muffler is sometimes more than what's available when the truck is on the ground. 4 Spray the fasteners holding the muffler to the SUV generously with a penetrating lubricant before you loosen them. The penetrating lubricant will help you to remove the screws and bolts with ease on clamp style fasteners. 5 Remove the old muffler by removing the nuts from the U-bolts that hold the muffler in place. Don't be surprised if the bolts break due to rust and/or age. You should never reuse these bolts, so even if they don't break, replace them all. 6 Replace the new muffler on your Dodge Durango. Line it up as straight as possible with the clamps and then tighten the bolts to hold it in place. Make sure you connect the muffler with the muffler hangers that come with it and use only parts designed for your truck. Tighten all bolts securely, but not so tight the muffler doesn't have any give during regular driving. Using 20 ft-lb torque will usually give you the fit you need. 7 Lower the SUV, start the engine and check the new muffler for any leaks or loud sounds. If there are any, then you may need to tighten the clamps more. Tips & Warnings Write down the mileage and date of the muffler change and keep this information with the muffler warranty. You may need it for future reference if the muffler breaks or malfunctions. If your muffler is welded in place instead of using a clamp system, you may have to use a hacksaw to cut it off or may be able to break it free with a sledge hammer if it's rusted up and already partially loose.
Dodge . How to Replace the Muffler on a Chevy CamaroSince 1967 the Chevy Camaro has been burning up the roads. This muscle car is popular among enthusiasts who often replace the stock muffler with a performance version. Whether your sports car has a stock or performance muffler, however, they occassionaly need replacement due to wear often caused by rust. You can replace the muffler, located on the back of the passenger side on the underneath of the car in about an hour. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 Spread out an old blanket or a large piece of cardboard on the ground to lie on as you replace the muffler. You can place the rear tires on a car jack if desired. 2 Purchase a new muffler. It must have a 2.25-inch center inlet/outlet, be 4 inches thick X 9.75 inches wide and have a 13-inch case length. Choose a muffler made from aluminum steel for the best quality. Make sure you get the muffler that corresponds to the year of your Camaro. 3 Look over the old muffler. Spray the fasteners generously with a penetrating lubricant such as WD40 before you loosen them. The penetrating lubricant will help you to remove the screws and bolts with ease. 4 Loosen the bolts at the bottom of the muffler strap. It's okay to let the muffler hang. Using a hacksaw, saw the stock muffler completely off of the pipe. Leave between 1 inch and 1 1/2 inches of straight pipe at the muffler inlet. 5 Put the muffler into place under the vehicle. Make sure the muffler inlet slips over the exhaust pipe with ease. Straighten the muffler over the pipe and then tighten the muffler clamp on the muffler inlet using a flathead screwdriver. 6 Start the vehicle, carefully inspecting the muffler for leaks and loud sounds. If there are loud sounds or leaks, you will need to tighten the bolts more. However, the clamps should be loose enough to allow the muffler to move a little with the movement of the car. Tips & Warnings Write down the date and the mileage of the car when you change the muffler. Keep this information with the muffler warranty. ResourcesBuy a new muffler for your Chevy Camaro. *stripping according to the directions in Chapter 24. If you hear an unlocatable sound, get an old stethoscope from a medical supply house or ask your family doctor. As shown in Figure 20-1, take off the rubber disc and insert a piece of tubing in its place (about VA inches will do). Then put the plugs in your ears, run the engine, and move the tube end of the stethoscope around the hood area. The stethoscope amplifies the sound as you near the part that's causing it. o m i ii H 925

Place one end of the wrench on the bone behind your ear and, leaning over, place the other end of the wrench on the parts that seem to be the source of the noise. Be careful not to get a shock or get your hair tangled in the fan. If your brakes squeal, the brake linings may be glazed or worn. Some disc brake pads have built-in wear sensors that squeal when it's time to replace them. Even though some disc brakes tend to squeal under normal circumstances, it's safer to have the brakes checked, or follow the instructions in Chapter 18 and check them yourself. Dodge . Dodge Ram Wagon 1500. * If the car idles with an offbeat rhythm, it isn't becoming creative; it's probably misfiring — one of the spark plugs or the wires that connect them to the distributor cap may be at fault. Try the following: • With the engine off, check the spark plug cables for breaks or shorts in the wiring. • With the engine off, remove the spark plugs one at a time and check whether they're clean and properly gapped. Replace any that are fouled or burned. If that doesn't help, have a technician check the ignition system with an electronic engine analyzer. People used to check spark plugs by holding the end of the spark plug cable close to a metal surface to see whether a spark jumped across when the engine was cranked, but the high voltage in most ignition systems now makes that procedure extremely dangerous. If the idling is rough but even and your vehicle has a carburetor, the carburetor settings may need to be adjusted. Chapter 13 shows you how to do this yourself. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the carburetor. Fuel-injected vehicles don't have carburetors, and a technician must check and adjust these complex electronic systems. Try checking the compression in each cylinder, following the instructions in the section of Chapter 13 called "Checking the Compression in Your Cylinders." If the engine needs to be rebuilt, you may prefer to get another engine — or another vehicle. Dodge . MY Ac compressor kicks off shortly after starting the car?

Doing so amplifies the sound and enables you to hear the rhythm. A misfiring cylinder comes through as a pumping or puffing sound. An even but rough idle is a clue that it's time to retune your carburetor — especially the idle mixture and idle speed screws. Chapter 13 has instructions for doing this job. If your car sounds like a jet plane or makes some other loud, abnor mal sound, a hole in the muffler is probably the cause. Replace it immediately: Traffic cops hate noisy mufflers, and carbon monoxide hates people! Chapter 20: Troubleshooting Leaks, Squeaks, Smells, and Strange Sensations A O C If the horn is stuck, your vehicle is producing what may be the worst noise it can make. Before this happens, have someone honk your horn until you can locate it under your hood. There are usually two horns. Each has a wire leading to it. If your horn gets stuck, pull these wires to stop the noise (see Figure 20-2) — sometimes you have to pull only one. When you have the horn fixed, tell the mechanic that you pulled the wires and find out why the horn got stuck. (If you can't get at the horn wires, disconnect one battery terminal or pull the fuse that goes to the horn to stop the noise.) Figure 20-2: If your horn gets stuck, pull a wire to silence it.
